DIY Christmas Decor Ideas

If you’re like me, the holidays mean going all out on holiday decorating. (My family is always amazed at how extreme I get with filling every nook and cranny of my home with red bows, silver bells, boughs of holly and everything “fa la la la la”.)

From the fireplace mantel to a very merry front porch, my house is full of holiday festive decor. The good news is that you don't have to put a huge dent in your holiday shopping budget by buying new decorations. There are plenty of do-it-yourself projects to fill your home with holiday cheer.

Take your holiday spirit to a crafty level this year with these DIY Christmas house decor ideas:

1. Fireplace mantel details

Dress up the mantel for the holidays with handmade mini trees, garlands, string lights and holiday-scented candles. HGTV suggested adding glitzy seasonal detail by covering a toy figurine, such as a deer or Christmas tree, with glue and glitter. The mantel is also the perfect place to create a holiday scene with the decorative pieces you already own.

2. Or fake fireplace it

Don't have a fireplace? No problem. You can recreate that cozy feeling with this faux mantel wall hanging project from HGTV. Good Housekeeping also had the genius idea to fake a cozy fire in an out-of-use fireplace by piling up birch longs and greenery sprigs.

3. No-sewing-required tree skirts

Buy some felt or flannel at your local craft score and you can fashion an adorable tree skirt - even if you're lacking in the sewing skills department. This colorful tutorial from HGTV only involves felt and fabric glue, and House Beautiful found some flannel tree skirt ideas if that's more your style.

4. Starry night walls

Create your own 3-D gallery wall by hanging a mix of paper, metal and wood stars with twine. The best part is that this feature can stay up beyond the holiday as seasonal decor.

5. Winterize the porch

Don't forget about the exterior when you're busy dazzling up the inside of your home with Christmas decor. Don your porch and front door with mini trees, wreaths and other seasonal details.

6. Deck the stairway

Line the banister with fresh pine garland and bows for fabulous stairway Christmas decor. If you have leftover ornaments, hang them from the greenery. The banister is also a great candidate for hanging stockings if you don't have a fireplace mantel.

7. Craft unconventional trees

If you don't have room for a real tree and simply want some additional decor, you can craft your own tree from virtually any material. Use tape or yarn to style a mini tree on empty wall space, use paper or pom-poms to symbolize ornaments. And while you have the craft supplies out, you can also spice up your actual tree with some homemade ornaments.

8.  Make it a green Christmas

Pot small plants in Christmas mugs for the perfect kitchen or window sill details. They can also be a great addition to your mantel decor.

While you're in the holiday and gift-giving spirit, consider giving yourself the gift of peace of mind -- a plan so you’re prepared for home repairs. See how plans from HomeServe can help with the costs of covered home repairs.
